The Federal Reserve's balance sheet minus cash parked by money-market funds (reverse repos) and the US Treasury's account. When this number rises, the Fed is putting more money into the financial system — a signal that US liquidity conditions are easing.

What each BIS measure is forShow
Global aggregate
Total cross-border lending (loans plus bonds) divided by world GDP. — Whether the world is borrowing faster than it's producing.
Currency component
Same cross-border lending pool, but measured in US dollars instead of as a share of GDP. — The absolute size of the pile in dollar terms.
Credit component
Cross-border credit to non-banks (companies, governments) as a share of world GDP. — The clearest read on whether credit is outrunning the real economy.
Banking sector
Cross-border credit to banks themselves, as a share of world GDP. — Stress or relief concentrated between banks as borrowers.
Bond markets
Year-over-year growth in emerging-market bond issuance. — Whether EM borrowers are still finding lenders — negative is a risk-off tell.
Cross-border flows
Non-bank cross-border credit (debt securities plus non-bank loans) as a share of world GDP. — Captures the shadow-banking channel that bank-only stats miss.

G3 balance sheets

Major central bank assets (USD scale)

G3 = the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan — the three central banks whose balance sheets set the tone for global liquidity. Shown as gross asset size (not the Fed "net liquidity" strip above), converted to USD using daily FX rates. Fed and ECB report weekly; Bank of Japan reports monthly, so its line steps when new data arrives.

Monetary policy

Central bank policy rates

Monthly official rates from the BIS WS_CBPOL dataflow—fresher than the quarterly liquidity stock indicators. The “12m” column is the change in percentage points versus about a year ago.

Compare BIS liquidity signals on one chart

Each colored line is one measure from the source shown above. Turn them on or off to compare—when most climb together, money is usually easier to find overall; when they split apart, stress is building in one corner of the system.

How this is calculatedShow

WALCL − RRPONTSYD −WDTGAL: total Fed assets minus overnight reverse repurchase agreements (money-market cash at the Fed) minus the US Treasury General Account at the Fed — a common weekly net-liquidity shorthand tied to H.4.1.

Series are from the Federal Reserve H.4.1 release onThursdays, carried on FRED with roughly a3–4 day lag relative to the as-of Wednesday close.
